Cases were brought before the Dublin District Court by the Data Protection Commissioner against leading telecommunications companies: UPC, Vodafone, 02 and Eircom for breaches of the Data Protection Acts. The four companies pleaded guilty to a list of charges relating to direct marketing. The case against UPC was described by the Data Protection Commissioner, Mr. Tony Delaney as “one of the most serious cases, in terms of phone calls, that has ever come before the Data Protection Commission.
