Philip Lee's media and IP practices expand their tax capabilities

Gavin McGuireThe partners of Philip Lee are delighted to announce that Gavin McGuire has recently joined the firm. Gavin is an experienced commercial lawyer who specialises in tax. The addition of Gavin to our team has enhanced and strengthened the firm’s ability to advise on the taxation aspects of complex transactions and we believe it will be of significant benefit to many of our clients in both the private and public sectors.

Gavin joins us from another leading Dublin firm where he was responsible for setting up the tax practice. Prior to this he worked in London for a number of years with a "Big 4" accountancy practice and subsequently with a large London law firm.

Gavin has extensive experience of advising on the tax aspects of corporate transactions as well as on tax planning and tax mitigation. This experience includes the design of inward investment structures, outward investment and managing tax issues on multi-jurisdictional projects. His expertise covers advice across all tax heads as well as regularly dealing with Revenue enquiries.

Gavin has been involved in a number of M&A tax disputes involving warranty, indemnity and tax deed claims. He has advised one of the main issuers of W&I and tax transactional insurance in Ireland and the UK and was responsible for jointly drafting their transactional insurance policy. In the current market, with liquidity and cost of funds being a real issue, he has valuable experience of using insurance products to enable transactions to proceed.

In recent years Gavin has worked closely with many high net worth individuals on mitigating the costs of transferring value to the next generation or on minimising their personal tax liabilities. As part of that advice he structures tax-efficient wills which address both the need to minimise tax liabilities and the requirements of asset protection.

Gavin is a member of the Law Society's Tax Committee and a member of the Institute of Taxation's Policy and Technical Committee. He is also moderator of a number of examinations for the Institute of Taxation.

Clients highlight Gavin's "extremely clever tax structuring and skill in answering technical questions" (Chambers 2011) and he is known for his “comprehensive understanding of the interaction between UK and Irish tax law” (Chambers Global).

Gavin McGuire is "widely applauded for his technical knowledge coupled with a pragmatic business approach" (Legal 500).
