Banking and Finance
Jonathan Kelly heads the team at Philip Lee, which has been highly active in project finance. Recent work includes advising Aqua Comms on the financing of the $300m America Europe Connect project.

Commercial, corporate and M&A
Philip Lee’s developing mid-market practice recently hired public M&A specialist Ita O’Sullivan. Practice head Andreas McConnell and recently promoted partner Eoghan Doyle are recommended for work with medical devices start-ups. Jonathan Kelly has been advising Ryanair on its largest ever share buyback.

Philip Lee’s expertise in handling public sector construction projects was again in evidence, with the ‘insightfulKerri Crossen advising the National Development Finance Authority on three school accommodation projects. Disputes specialist Clare Cashin shows ‘phenomenal attention to detail’ and is also highlighted as the only next generation lawyer in the sector.

Dispute resolution
Philip Lee has a strong public sector practice and recently earned panel appointments with the HSE and An Bord Pleanála. Practice head Damien Young and Ann Henry recently represented the Irish Data Protection Commissioner before the European Court of Justice in proceedings relating to the transfer of data from Europe to the US.

EU and competition
Philip Lee’s team is led by founding partner Philip Lee, who is well known for advising public bodies on the competition and state aid aspects of procurement matters. The team also handles competition litigation and merger clearance work for clients such as Ryanair.

Philip Lee ‘takes strong ownership of the briefs given’ by public sector and retail clients. Practice head Patrick Walshe has ‘great commercial acumen’.

Energy and natural resources
Philip Lee’s team includes name partner Philip Lee and Alice Whittaker, who give ‘constructive and clear advice’ on renewable energy work to clients such as Power Capital. The firm is developing its practice and recently hired associate Elaine Traynor.

Information technology
Philip Lee’s practice head Anne Bateman is recommended for IT, data protection and social media work.

Intellectual property
Philip Lee continued to handle major litigation for key client Ryanair, which it represented in a trade mark infringement action against Google Ireland, Google Inc and eDreams in the Commercial Court. Anne Bateman and Ann Henry are recommended.

Media and advertising
Philip Lee’s very strong practice handles film and television financing and productions, advising clients such as The Irish Film Board. Key players include Jonathan Kelly, whom one client calls ‘the outstanding lawyer in Ireland in film and television’, and Brian Gormley.

Planning and environment
Philip Lee’s ‘well-informed’ team includes litigator Rachel Minch, who has been active in judicial reviews for the Irish Planning Board. Practice head Alice Whittaker, who gives ‘clear and constructive advice’, successfully obtained planning consent for the National Paediatric Hospital Development Board.

Projects and PPP

Public sector

Real estate
The ‘very commercially minded’ John O’Donoghue heads the team at Philip Lee, which advised Ernst and Young on the sale of the Harvey Norman unit in Cork. Lone Star and Power Capital are also clients.

At Philip Lee, Gavin McGuire’s caseload includes corporate restructuring, M&A and advice in relation to disputes with the Office of the Revenue Commissioners. One mandate included advising on the tax aspects of Sigmoid Pharma’s acquisition of Freund Pharmatec.
